America the Beautiful!

ImageMy family and I sang some patriotic songs in church last Sunday in honor of Independence Day. It was nice to sing those songs among people of faith and to read the lyrics on the screens as we sang together. We sang “America the Beautiful” in its full version.  After the song, my eleven year old quietly whispered to me, “Mom we sing that song at school all the time but I never knew all the words because we don’t sing the parts about God.”  I was happy she distinguished the difference but sad that it is a reality of the country we live in. We take the most important part of how we began (God) out of our history.

On this July 4th, I have to admit that I am a little sad. My country is changing. Our Constitution is being rewritten and changed. History in our schools has been rewritten or just deleted. Our leaders (on all sides) are placing politics over principle. However, most importantly God is being written out of our foundation.

I never really paid attention to the words in this song and read them in the full version. They really are beautiful. After church, my daughter and I were discussing the importance of why God was so important in this song and she said simply, “America is Beautiful because of God.” I couldn’t have said it any better!

Enjoy the lyrics in their full version.

America the Beautiful
Written by: Katherine Lee Bates

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!

America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassion’d stress
A thorough fare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness.

America! America!
God mend thine ev’ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law.

O beautiful for heroes prov’d
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life.

America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev’ry gain divine.

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears.

America! America!
God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.
